The smartphone ecosystem today has two dominant players: Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems. A late entrant, Android, has been quick to catch up with iOS and the Open operating system only seems to be surging ahead.

Given the success of Android, many other Open Source paradigms are being floated, most notably the Free and Open Source projects Firefox (of browser fame) and Ubuntu that are re-making their debut this year in the commercial smartphone segment. Together, these projects that have been successful in the technology segments they currently operate in could perhaps help break into the combined monopoly of Apple and Google in the smartphone segment.

Canonical’s Ubuntu is trying to market the idea that smartphones must be as capable as one’s PC and are trying to port the Ubuntu OS from the desktop ... Read more »

The bunny suit meets the sari. That, in a nutshell, is what India’s first Playboy bunnies will be wearing, once the first Playboy Club opens in India next year.

The original bunny suit – the outfit worn by waitresses in Playboy Clubs – was co-designed in the 1960s by Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy magazine. It consists of a corset, a collar, bunny ears and a fluffy tail.

The Indian version is far more conservative, in keeping with local cultural sensitivities. The bunnies will be wearing full-length sheer skirts and tube tops with fabric draped over one of their shoulders. All else stays. Designed by Mohini Tadikonda, a New-York based fashion designer, the Indian version of the Playboy Bunny was unveiled at a press conference Wednesday in Mumbai.

Washington, Jan 11: The USA has stressed that India and Pakistan should engage with each other more, instead of looking for a third party to mediate. Washington said this while Islamabad sought a third-party intervention in the ongoing border skirmish issue and India ruling out any such possibility.

State department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said both the Asian neighbours were making good progress in recent times by working through various difficult issues, including trade. She said if the two countries could reach an agreement on the border issue as well, it would be the best outcome. Washington was clearly trying to avoid Pakistan's bait to get involved in the problem.

It can be mentioned here that the US and Pakistan are going through perhaps the worst phase in bilateral relations. New Delhi, on the other hand, is enjoying a ... Read more »

Chicago, Jan 9: The mortal remains of an Indian-American businessman who died here within hours of receiving a cheque for the million-dollar jackpot that he had won could be exhumed soon in order to clear the mystery over how he was poisoned. In Jun 2012, Urooj Khan bought two Illinois lottery scratchcards from a store that he used to frequent. The 46-year-old scratched one of the cards at the 7-Eleven store itself and jumped up in joy on discovering that he had won the first prize of $1 million. Khan had two options - collect just $600,000 immediately or receive the entire sum in installments. The owner of a dry cleaning chain in North Side here preferred the former. On Jul 19, Khan received a cheque for about $425,000, the amount he was entitled to get after taxes.
